Humanity has been living on this planet for thousands of years, alongside countless other creatures. It seems like a long time. Like this planet has always been this way. But before us, there were millions of years, when others ruled this world: the dinosaurs. Their species was around for much, much longer than we are at this point. But then, 65 million years ago, the non-avian dinosaurs were extinct. An asteroid impact wiped out this majorly successful species. It can happen again. Earth is mostly in a quiet neighborhood, but here and there, big impactors will strike. It's not a question of "if". It's "when". Even much smaller bodies than the one that killed the dinosaurs, can be devastating for our civilization, at least locally. So what can we do? In contrast to the dinosaurs, we have an advantage: we actually do science. We do observational and theoretical astronomy. We have the tools, to become Earth's Defenders, if need be. How do we do it? How good are our chances? And what is the plan, if things get serious? Do we simply "Armageddon" this problem or are there better ways? Astronomy can only be enjoyed and practiced at night? It's a common misconception! Actually, there is plenty to do and see in a daytime sky, you just have to know where to look and how to be safe. Please, always take good care of your eyesight and never look directly into the sun, especially not with binoculars or a telescope. Paul shows you around the astronomer's daytime sky, what to discover, what to experience and how to enjoy the stars, space and everything in between pretty much 24/7! Offenbaren die Little Red Dots also ein Big Dark Secret?
Very soon, on the evening of August 12th, there will be a special event for us to behold. Well, for some of us. The solar eclipse will be visibile in its totality in Iceland, Greenland and parts of Spain and Portugal as well as some mediterranian islands. But even in the rest of western Europe, people will be able to witness at least a partial eclipse. In the southern parts of Germany, coverage of the sun will be up to 89%. So get your solar eclipse safetly glasses out and check in with Paul to learn how to best watch this eclipse and why it is so very special this time! A permanent base on the moon - sounds like science fiction? Well, it may be way closer than you migh believe. Within the Artemis program, a lunar outpost is actually part of the plan. It is clear: this time, we go to the moon to stay. So, we might see the first lunar base built within our lifetimes, as a space port for deeper missions, maybe even as a mining hub and definitely as a place for amazing science! What does it take to build a moon base? When will it be operational? Who will build it? Paul sets out to find you some answers.
