Genomic Selection in Cassava with Dr. Diego Jarquin

"Sparse testing designs for optimising resource allocation in multi-environment cassava breeding trials" with Dr. Diego Jarquin Cassava is an important staple crop around the world, but plant breeding efforts can be slow and difficult with limited plant materials and other resources. In this episode, Diego joins me to discuss how genomic selection might rapidly increase this process. Forest Residue Biochar with Dr. Dipita Ghosh

"Role of biochar made from low-value woody forest residues in ecological sustainability and carbon neutrality" with Dipita Ghosh. Forest debris can clutter forests, squelch healthy growth, and increase the risks of dangerous wildfires, but open burning these residues can be just as problematic, with increased greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and, that's right, wildfire risks. Turning forest debris into biochar instead can alleviate a lot of these problems while increasing soil health in degraded regions, but to what degree is biochar useful and how can we get it where it needs to go? In this episode, Dipita joins me to discuss her work on all things biochar. Novaluron and Annual Bluegrass Weevil with Dr. Benjamin McGraw

"Lethal and sublethal effects of novaluron, a novel insect growth regulator, on annual bluegrass weevil, Listronotus maculicollis Kirby, lifestages in turfgrass" with Benjamin A McGraw. Today we'll be talking to Dr. Benjamin McGraw. Annual bluegrass weevil or ABW is a pest that preys on golf course turf. Novaluron is a new pesticide that may be able to help control ABW, but how does it work and at which life stages is it most effective? In this episode, Benjamin joins me to discuss his work studying novaluron. Soil Health Principles in Iowa with Dr. Marshall McDaniel and Hillary Olson

"Putting the Soil Health Principles to the Test in Iowa, USA" with Dr. Marshall McDaniel and Hillary Olson Soil health principles can help guide farmers in best practices for long term soil health and improvement. However, it's important to test these principles across locations and contexts to see how their implementation is actually shaping soil health. In this episode, Marshall and Hillary join me to discuss testing the soil health principles in Iowa and how this might be expanded into further regions. Tune in to learn: · What the soil health principles are · Which soil health indicators are fast or slow movers · Why it's difficult to weight soil health principles · What future research is yet to be done If you would like more information about this topic, this episode's paper is available here: https://doi.org/10.1002/saj2.20761 This paper is always freely available.
