This week we're joined by Steve Gravina, Clinical Director at Front Runner Physiotherapy, who brings over 18 years of experience working with athletes, including eight years in elite AFL with the West Coast Eagles. For anyone serious about their running, this is an episode well worth your time.Having both spent far too much time on Steve's treatment table over the past 12 months, Ryan and Dean take the opportunity to pick his brains on just about everything runners should understand about injuries, rehabilitation and, most importantly, how to avoid ending up injured in the first place. Some of the highlights from the conversation:🦴 Bone stress injuries & returning to running – Why bone injuries can take weeks to reveal themselves, the dangers of progressing too quickly and how to safely rebuild training without risking another setback.🚦 Niggle or injury? – How do you know when discomfort is a normal part of training versus a warning sign that something isn't right? Steve shares a practical framework runners can use to assess their symptoms.📈 Training load & injury prevention – Why gradually increasing mileage isn't necessarily enough to protect you, how accumulated fatigue catches up with runners and why recovery is just as important as the training itself.🏋️ Strength training for runners – How often should we be in the gym? How heavy should we lift? And what does an effective strength programme actually look like for someone whose priority is running?🧠 The psychology of injury – A fascinating discussion on how prolonged injuries can change the way our brain processes pain, why pain doesn't always mean ongoing tissue damage and the mental challenges of being sidelined.👟 Super shoes & changing injury patterns – Steve shares some interesting observations from the clinic about an apparent increase in bone stress injuries around the hips and pelvis, and whether modern footwear could be playing a part.😴 The fundamentals of staying healthy – Sleep, nutrition, training surfaces, shoe rotation, mobility and the habits Steve believes make the biggest difference to long-term consistency. We also hear about Steve's time behind the scenes at the West Coast Eagles, including how elite sporting teams make decisions around injured athletes and some surprisingly quick (and not so quick!) 2km time trials. The biggest takeaway? There's far more to staying injury-free than simply managing your weekly mileage. Understanding how your body responds to training, recognising early warning signs and building the capacity to tolerate load are all crucial to long-term improvement.Whether you're currently injured, navigating a return to running or simply trying to string together consistent months and years of training, there's plenty to take away from this one.A huge thanks to Steve for being so generous with his time and knowledge, and to everyone who submitted questions!🎧 Enjoy the episode, and let us know your biggest takeaway in the comments!
We start off episode 89 paying tribute to Irish running legend Ciara Mcgeean, who sadly lost her battle with cancer early Sunday morning at the young age of 34. Ciara was an inspiration to everyone along with being such a beautiful person inside and out and will be sadly missed amongst everyone.New York Marathon dominated the agenda with Andreas Almgren storming to victory on his debut with a 2:06:01 while on the womens side Sheila Chepkirui pulls off an upset over Hellen Obiri, and Jess McClain dips her on the line. We break down why this unpaced race was the best marathon to watch all year and also cover the Abbott 5K Dash and Noosa Bolt Results over in Australia.📺 In YouTube Diaries segment, we dive into Almgren’s “Entering the Unknown Part Two” on Nomio’s channel and explore what’s next for the Swede.SPOTIFY DESCRIPTION: Download episode transcript from Riverside and send to AI, ask for a Spotify Episode description highlighting the main topics of conversation Include the below paragraphs at the bottom: 📸 FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM Keep up with the boys, race results, episode clips and everything happening at Easy Double. 👉 https://www.instagram.com/easydoublepod/ ⭐ RATE & REVIEW THE PODCAST If you're enjoying Easy Double, please take a moment to give us a 5-star rating on Spotify. Welcome to the final episode of our bi-weekly series The Road To Dublin, where we follow three athletes building toward the Dublin Marathon on October 25th. We followed three runners who had three very different Dublin Marathon experiences. Bri nails her debut (2:57, national medal). Troy battles stomach issues at 5k as his heart rate hits 215bpm. Will struggles with fuelling and wind on his comeback. We break down what went right, what went catastrophically wrong, and what's next.Enjoy!
This week we're joined by one of Australia's finest runners, Matt Ramsden.Fresh off a 28:31 and a podium finish at the Australian Road Running Championships, Matt joins Ryan and Dean to reflect on a career that's taken him from a promising junior in Perth to the world's biggest stages. We take a trip down memory lane, from his early battles with Ollie Hoare and Jakob Ingebrigtsen to joining Melbourne Track Club, signing with Nike and pacing Joshua Cheptegei to both his 5,000m and 10,000m world records.Matt opens up about the circumstances surrounding his Tokyo Olympic non-selection, the Achilles injury that derailed his Paris ambitions, and the perspective he's gained through those setbacks. We also get a fascinating insight into the realities of professional running contracts, his training philosophy, and how he's now juggling life as an elite athlete, full-time lawyer and head coach of Ram's Running. With his competitive fire returning and a track 10,000m debut on the horizon at Zatopek, there's plenty more to come from the self-proclaimed (well, Ryan-proclaimed) Starboy of WA running.Enjoy the episode!
Jakarta Half Marathon saw Dean race in brutal heat, finishing 11th in a stacked international field. Dublin Marathon delivered drama along with 75km/h winds, elite Irish talent battling brutal conditions, and Road to Dublin crew finding out just how unforgiving the marathon can be. Valencia Half served up close finishes and Spanish national record intrigue. Bernie Ten in Tasmania showcased Australia’s domestic depth with Ed Marks dominating and Georgie Gregec running wild.📰 Running news hits different this week. LA Olympic marathon window opens November 1st with 70 spots (down from 80—still scratching our heads on that one). But the headline: Perez Jepchichir provisionally suspended for EPO. Multiple Olympic and world champion, four-time major winner, world record holder in the half. Caught six weeks before Sydney. We break down what this means for the sport, the systemic issues, and why trust in elite distance running just evaporated.👊 Double Trouble explores doping culture, agent accountability, and whether East African distance running can be salvaged. It’s heavy, it’s necessary, and it’s honest.Personal wins: Ryan’s injury scan came back positive (stress response resolved), Dean’s back from Jakarta, and Eoin's soaking up Spanish sun .🎙️ SUPPORT THE PODCAST ON PATREONWant more Easy Double? With Dean enjoying another holiday on Rottnest, Ryan and Eoin are joined by the mileage king himself, Jake Barraclough (Ran to Japan), for a bumper episode of Easy Double.Jake takes us inside life as the Marathon Monk, training alongside some of Japan's fastest runners at ND Soft. We break down his latest 216km training week (a down week, apparently), including 30km runs finished with flat-out kilometre reps, marathon-specific sessions, and the differences between Japanese and Western approaches to training and fuelling. He also discusses his recent back injury scare, racing plans and preparations for December's Marathon Project, alongside his experience rubbing shoulders with Clayton Young at the Great North Run.Meanwhile, Eoin kicks off his Irish cross country season with a fourth-place finish at the Autumn Open as he builds towards the National Championships.Elsewhere, the boys cover the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon, Amsterdam and Beijing Marathons, Andreas Almgren's frightening training ahead of his marathon debut in New York, and a listener-submitted Double Trouble tackling one of running's biggest pet hates: discarded gel wrappers on race courses.Plenty of running chat, questionable accents and big mileage. What a week of marathon running and no need to fear if you missed any of it as we have you covered.Perth Running Festival brought the goods with Dominic Ngenu’s strong solo win in the marathon, Dean racing hard in the 10K and finishing third, and impressive times across the board. Melbourne Marathon delivered the spectacle, Kipchoge doing Kipchoge things, Tommy De Canto showing experience and running a PB, and Jimmy Whelan learning the hard way that 2:08 ambitions on debut don’t translate. Chicago saw Clayton Young’s gutsy come-from-behind American record, Charles Hicks right there hunting, and the women’s race owned by Izzy Bat-doyle smashing the Australian/Oceania record in 2:20:38.📰 In running news, the stories were everywhere. Perth’s got problems to fix, no kilometer markers on course, missing elite drinks, and a few questions about social media strategy. But the depth of Australian marathon running is genuinely unhinged. Seth O’Donnell solo 61:20 in the half. Nicola Sheridan from Ireland flying a 2:29 after switching to Sydney. The domestic talent pool is ridiculous.📺 YouTube Diaries gets a big one this week. Marcus Malone dropped a 50-minute documentary called Ordinary Excellence, the Grant Fisher story. Long-form content done properly, childhood, college, coaching relationships, build-up to New York. It’s storytelling, not highlight reels. Shout to Joey Bowden for the tip-off.👊 Double Trouble stays light as Ryan gets some grief!Plenty in this one.
