Frankenstein is the doctor. The creation of the doctor is the monster. However, the monster is what we call Frankenstein. Whatever you want to call it, in this episode we will examine the possibility Dr. Frankenstein’s creation could be diagnosable using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-V). Alternatively, perhaps we could look at the problems the monster has using a behavior analytic point of view.Highlights:Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. How an upbringing centered on science and human rights shaped the well known work of literature. The 1931 movie. The monster’s struggles with impulse control, language, and correct interpretation of social cues.A reading of Priyanka Jain’s Monstrosity (2014) paper and the various interpretations of the Shelley story.Diagnosing the monster using the DSM-V-TR. A look at each of the criteria. The Book of Woe by Gary Greenberg. Criminal Behaviorology Episode # 74Title: The Behavior of SupervisionThe entire presentation can be found on the YouTube channel: @criminalbehaviorology - https://youtu.be/EPM7Tb6hfLUThe views of our guests do not necessarily reflect those of Criminal Behaviorology, nor our sponsors. Donate to Criminal Behaviorology Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/cw/u81930699Highlights:This interview focused on the importance of improving supervision in behavior analysis, with Dr. Weinberg discussing the upcoming comprehensive book on behavior analytic supervision co-authored with Joseph Catilli and Lynn Connor. Mike emphasized the need for evidence-based supervision and highlighted the current gaps in training, particularly in case conceptualization and interdisciplinary collaboration. He shared examples of complex cases where medical and neurological issues influenced behavior, stressing the importance of recognizing the limits of behavioral interventions. The conversation also covered the high rates of burnout among behavior analysts and the need for a restorative model to address supervisor burnout. Dr. Weinberg proposed the development of a structured system for supervised experience placements, similar to APA's model in psychology, to improve the quality of supervision and training in the field. We discussed the challenges of preparing new BCBAs for complex cases and the potential for rotations in various settings to broaden their experience. The book aims to serve as a comprehensive resource for universities and practicing behavior analysts.Mike Weinberg playlist on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNL_Pvg9D8r4- A Behavior Analysis Supervision Book- BCBA Supervision Quality Improvements- BCBA Burnout and Supervision- Supervision as Something Ongoing- Severe Self-Injurious Behavior Intervention: We All Get Tough Cases- Prader-Willi Syndrome Intervention Strategies- Behavioral Programing Training Interventions- Behavioral Issues and Medical Causes- Behavior Analysts Cross-Training Program- Supervised Experience Site Placement Program- Behavior Analytic Supervision Coordination Plans- Behavior Interventions on SupervisorsLook up CrimBehav on Facebook: facebook.com/CrimBehavCriminal Behaviorology on Blogger. We cover the Dan White case from San Francisco, California in the 1970s. Mr. White murdered Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, after a series of disputes. In the years since many have scoffed at White’s lawyers who argued his poor diet led to physiological state where the defendant was suffering from a diminished ability to make decisions (i.e., “Twinkie Defense”). Could there have been something to that idea? Join us for this detailed discussion of how nutrition helps conduct our behavior. Contact Dr. Brown at jerrod01234brown@live.com for further information on this topic. He will provide a copy of the comprehensive nutritional neuroscience article to anyone who emails him.Highlights:- “Twinkie defense”: The Dan White case overview- Diet and criminal behavior connection- Lead paint- Prison diet and health impact- Circadian rhythms and their impact on health and behavior- The basics of neurotransmitters, neurohormones, and the HPA axis- The literature on lifestyle medicine and therapeutic lifestyle changes- Community partnerships and programs like community gardens and horticulture therapy- Criminal responsibility in light of nutritional neuroscience. We still feel the impact of these murders in the form of mandatory safety seals on medicine, milk, candy, and virtually every other kind of consumable product.
