Even when we're surrounded by people, we can still feel deeply alone. Loneliness will have you wondering, “Will anyone ever fully see me, know me, and love me in light of what they see?” In this conversation, Jackie and Preston discuss the ways loneliness can leave us vulnerable, when it might be wise to choose being alone with God instead of running to other people, and how the enemy uses isolation to discourage us. They also explore why it’s important that we develop the trust, security and awareness of God’s presence so we’re not discouraged when people leave. This is part one of a two-part conversation, so come back next week for even more discussion of loneliness. What do you do with the pain that remains after you’ve forgiven someone? If we look to the Bible for guidance, we see that one-third of the Psalms are “imprecatory prayers,” or prayers for justice or vengeance. It’s in those prayers that we can find some helpful language for handing over that grief and anger to God, trusting Him with the outcome. Nona Jones joins Jackie and Preston to talk about her new book, “The Power of Petty Prayers.” They discuss why we can’t always wait for resentment to disappear before choosing to love, and how bitterness can become a debt we unknowingly hold against others. What does the Bible teach us about aging, and how might our perspective change if we viewed getting older through a theological lens rather than a cultural one? Preston and Jackie sit down with Jen Wilkin to discuss what Scripture says on the topic, explored further in Jen’s new book “Dust to Dust, Aging Wisely in an Anti-Aging World.” Jen, Jackie and Preston talk about why our culture often approaches aging with fear and contempt, how the fall has shaped our experience of our bodies, and what it looks like to embrace aging as part of the story God is telling. They also discuss caring for aging parents, embracing our own future dependence, honoring the wisdom of older generations, and the church’s responsibility to care for people throughout their entire lives. Pain changes us, and it can make us bitter before it makes us resilient. We can also become more attached to our pain than to our Savior, and that’s idolatry. Toni Collier joins the Perrys to talk about what bitterness looks like and what it means to reckon with our suffering instead of running from it. Toni and Preston discuss their individual experiences with ADHD and how their brains uniquely process trauma and pain. Toni unpacks her experience with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy and how it creates the space to process through hard things. Toni, Jackie and Preston together point to the fact that healing is a communal project – healing requires bringing our suffering to the Lord and to safe people in our lives. Y’all love a “storytime” episode and it’s been a while since the Perrys recorded one. The Perrys cover a wide range of topics, from legalism and the idea of “sinless perfection” to stories about identity, “hood” dynamics, and pretending to be someone you’re not. Jackie and Preston discuss the theology of justification and sanctification as they remember meeting someone during a stop on a poetry tour who claimed he had not sinned in 10 years. Then you’ll hear some high-school Jackie stories – like the time she was a fake gang member on her old Black Planet page – plus Preston’s recollection of the time he got robbed in Nigeria for multiple hours. It’s a funny one – enjoy. Scripture references: Romans 7:13-20, 23-24 Romans 7:5 1 Corinthians 1:2 This Episode is Sponsored By: crossway.org/WTPlyrics - Purchase The Sing! We hear a lot about people experiencing “father wounds” but what about those who carry heartache, anger or sorrow because of a wounding mother? When Dr. Sarita Lyons joined Jackie for the Glory Conference in 2023, an attendee asked about navigating difficult relationships with mothers. Feeling burdened by the Holy Spirit after that interaction and many conversations that followed it, Dr. Sarita has written a book to help people grieve honestly and heal deeply. Jackie, Preston and Dr. Sarita Lyons discuss what it means to honor your mother while still acknowledging the ways you’ve been hurt. They explore the difference between godly sorrow and condemnation, what it looks like to hold truth and grace together, and how the Gospel offers hope for wholeness. People say, “We’re more divided than ever before,” but are we okay with that, or are we going to do something about it? Are we normalizing division and disrespecting God by not prioritizing something He does? Jackie and Preson are joined by Pricelis Perreaux-Dominguez for a conversation on fighting for unity in the church. Unity does not mean erasing differences to have complete uniformity – that can lead to tribalism, idolatry, and ultimately dehumanization. The church has to be willing to lean into discomfort for the sake of unity in the Body of Christ, and that’s going to require us to actively pursue proximity, curiosity, humility, and honest conversations. We have to think about what we’re thinking about. Go back and read that again. Our thought life as Christ followers matters. It’s important we remain vigilant to identify and uproot the lies we’re believing, and to do that continually in community with the power of the Holy Spirit. This is part two of a conversation on the battlefield of the mind.
