AM’s Nightcrawler retrospective needed a Part 2. Of course it did. This week, we pick back up with Kurt Wagner and the X-Men and follow the fuzzy blue elf through Excalibur, the Mutant Massacre, Second Coming, resurrection, Krakoa, the Uncanny Spider-Man era, and the many ways Kurt keeps finding his way back to family.Along the way: mutant history gets messy, Heaven has pirates, the X-Men try very hard to be a functional family for at least one night, and AM makes the case that Nightcrawler’s real superpower may be his ability to keep choosing hope, kindness, faith, and love after everything he’s survived. If Part 1 was about what makes Kurt Wagner who he is, Part 2 is about what happens when that character gets tested again and again — and still comes out Nightcrawler.Follow the show: @upyournerdcredpodCiCi: @ciracdavisAM Diaz: @AMDiazArtSupport the show on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/cw/UpYourNerdCredPod
AM takes the mic for his first solo episode and goes straight for his favorite fuzzy blue elf.Part 1 traces Nightcrawler from Dave Cockrum’s pre-Marvel concept into Giant-Size X-Men #1, then digs into Kurt Wagner’s powers, faith, circus upbringing, and increasingly chaotic family tree—from Margali and Jimaine to Mystique, Rogue, Azazel, Destiny, and the modern answer to who Kurt’s parents actually are.Follow the show: @upyournerdcredpodCiCi: @ciracdavisAM Diaz: @AMDiazArtPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/cw/UpYourNerdCredPod
With friends like these, who needs enemies? Even villains know teamwork can be useful. The problem is getting a room full of independently powerful bad guys to agree on what winning actually looks like. With the Guardians and Green Lantern Corps fresh in our minds after Lanterns, CiCi and AM Diaz take on the supervillain group project from hell. When is a villain team an organized operation, and when is it a collection of egos wearing the same logo?We get into the Legion of Doom and Lex Luthor's limited ability to boss around other villains; Doctor Octopus and the Sinister Six, where everybody wants Spider-Man defeated but nobody wants someone else to get the win; the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, whose members don't necessarily share Magneto's goals; and the Masters of Evil, where the person lower in the hierarchy is usually the one stuck taking the L.From Skeletor's minions to Hydra's unlucky henchpeople, we're asking whether a shared enemy is enough to make a team—and what happens when the plan succeeds but the villains still disagree about who deserves credit. What villain team do you think actually knows how to work together? Tell us in the comments!🎙️ Up Your Nerd CredInstagram: @upyournerdcredpodCiCi: @ciracdavisAM Diaz: @AMDiazArtFind us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. Nobody stays dead in comics… except Bucky, Jason Todd, and Uncle Ben.Well. About that. This week, CiCi is getting into the many, many flavors of comic-book death: actually dead, presumed dead, retconned dead, resurrected, restored, undead, and “technically I survived the explosion, but things have not exactly been going great since.”We’re looking at what happened when Superman died—and why bringing him back didn’t erase what happened while he was gone. Then we get into Marvel Zombies, DCeased, and Blackest Night before asking the most important question in superhero medicine: did anybody actually see a body? From there, we’re talking Jason Todd’s extremely complicated road from Robin to Red Hood, including the reader vote that killed him, the explosion that actually did it, and the reality-warping/Lazarus Pit mess that eventually brought him back. Then there’s Bucky Barnes, whose famous death turned out to be a decades-long case of “actually, he survived,” and Uncle Ben, who is currently doing most of the heavy lifting for the concept of staying dead.Because maybe the question isn’t whether a character can come back. Maybe it’s whether their death still matters after they do.A couple of nerdy housekeeping notes: Bucky Barnes debuted in Captain America Comics #1 (1941)—CiCi shortened that to “Captain America #1” while recording. And during You’ve Got Issues, CiCi managed to hold up and discuss The Lady or the Tiger? and Other Logic Puzzles without actually saying its author’s name. The book is by Raymond Smullyan, and we apologize to Professor Smullyan’s ghost for discussing a book about logical reasoning while neglecting one extremely relevant fact.Follow @UpYourNerdCredPod on Instagram, and find the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. Monet St. Croix: Perfect Isn't Easy | Up Your Nerd CredMonet St. Croix has money, beauty, brains, confidence, and enough mutant powers to make “pick a lane” feel like a reasonable request. But being the girl with all the gifts doesn’t mean life has been particularly kind to her.CiCi is flying solo this week to dig into Monet’s extremely complicated history: one of the messier character debuts in X-Men history, an even messier family tree, Marius/Emplate, Penance, the sisters who decided impersonation was an acceptable solution to a missing sibling, Synch, the White Queen era, and what’s underneath all that very justified confidence.Because if you’re going to cosplay Monet St. Croix, apparently you should know exactly what you’re getting yourself into.Follow @UpYourNerdCredPod on Instagram.Find CiCi at @ciracdavis and AM at @amdiaz_art.Rate, review, subscribe, and send us the nerd questions keeping you up at night so we can help you up your nerd cred.Content note: This episode includes discussion of abuse, loss of bodily autonomy, grief, and suicidal thoughts as depicted in Monet’s comics history.
For literal years, AM has been telling CiCi that she needed to go to the Uncanny Experience. And for literal years, CiCi has basically responded, “That sounds fun! Have a great time!”Turns out she was missing out. Fine. AM was right. This week, we’re recapping the Uncanny Experience 2026: the X-Mansion, the professors, the classes, the Houses, Madripoor Nights, the drag show, the Cyclops and Phoenix wedding, celebrity guests, incredible cosplayers, and the general experience of being surrounded by people who are just as excited to talk about mutants as you are.CiCi talks about going from “everyone already knows each other and I’m going to be the awkward new kid” to making new friends, cosplaying Monet St. Croix, joining House Hellfire, attending Jean Grey’s extremely respectable and completely scandal-free bachelorette party, and realizing she probably should have listened to AM about this one a few years earlier.Meanwhile, AM was doing approximately 47 jobs as the Uncanny Experience’s resident Nightcrawler: teaching drama, greeting students, taking photos, officiating a superhero wedding, appearing at events, getting called out by drag queens, and—as apparently happens to Nightcrawler with surprising frequency—getting kissed. If you’re an X-Men fan who keeps looking at the Uncanny Experience and thinking, “Maybe next year,” take it from CiCi: do not spend four years being stubborn. Come next year. We’re planning to. In Part 2 of The Good, the Bad, and the Donna Troy, CiCi and AM keep digging into retroactive continuity—starting with some of the cleverest examples of writers changing what a story means without pretending the original story never happened.Swamp Thing gets one of comics’ great existential rewrites when Alan Moore asks a deeply uncomfortable question: what if Alec Holland didn’t become Swamp Thing at all? What if Alec died—and the thing walking around with his memories only thought it was him? Then Spider-Man goes from “teenager gets bitten by an irradiated spider” to an entire Web of Life and Destiny, complete with Spider-People across the multiverse, Madame Web, mystical connections, canon events, and the increasingly complicated question of whether becoming Spider-Man was ever actually an accident. And then there’s Magneto. His history as a Holocaust survivor wasn’t part of his original 1963 characterization, but it became so fundamental to understanding Erik Lehnsherr/Max Eisenhardt that adapting him for a modern timeline now creates its own continuity problem. How do you update a character without removing the history that made him who he is?Which brings us to the dangerous part of retcons: every change has a blast radius. Sometimes you change one detail and make decades of storytelling richer. Sometimes you need another retcon to explain the last retcon, another Crisis to fix the last Crisis, and eventually Donald Duck has run out of fingers to plug the holes in the boat. And yes, eventually we have to talk about Donna Troy.Along the way: Alan Moore being an actual wizard, why Marvel and DC desperately need OSHA, Dakota Johnson mentally leaving Madame Web before the rest of us did, Spider-Man metaphysics getting wildly out of hand, Charles and Erik making their relationship everybody else’s problem, Scarlet Witch family trees, the High Evolutionary doing weird shit on Mount Wundagore, and whether comic-book continuity should ever be treated like sacred text.Follow Up Your Nerd Cred:Instagram: @UpYourNerdCredPodCiCi: @CiraCDavisAM Diaz: @AMDiazArtListen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube, and like, subscribe, and send us the burning nerd questions you want us to tackle next.#UpYourNerdCred #ComicBooks #Marvel #DCComics #Retcons #ComicBookHistory #SwampThing #AlanMoore #SpiderMan #SpiderVerse #MadameWeb #Magneto #XMen #DonnaTroy #ScarletWitch #Continuity #Multiverse #SuperheroComics #NerdCulture
Retcon has become a dirty word in nerd spaces—but some of the things we consider absolutely essential to our favorite characters weren’t there in the first draft. This week on Up Your Nerd Cred, CiCi and AM are talking about the fine art of retroactive continuity: when changing the past makes a character richer, a universe more coherent, or a story considerably better. The goal? A nice, neat laparoscopic retcon. Tiny incision, repair the problem, respect the surrounding anatomy, and please do not leave canon looking like an episode of Botched. We dig into Superman’s constantly evolving mythology—from leaping tall buildings to flying, Kryptonite, and the ever-expanding list of Kryptonian survivors—and how characters like Supergirl and Alfred Pennyworth became indispensable parts of stories they weren’t originally part of.Then we hit some of the best examples of new ideas becoming impossible to imagine the mythology without: Batman: The Animated Series turning Mr. Freeze into the tragic Victor Fries we know today; Harley Quinn making the jump from animation into the DC canon; and the Speed Force giving decades of Flash lore a common foundation.Marvel gets its turn too, with Wolverine’s bone claws, the resurrection of Bucky Barnes as the Winter Soldier, and a Mary Jane Watson retcon that gives MJ a whole lot more agency in Peter Parker’s story. And then there’s Jason Todd, whose original backstory was basically “what if Dick Grayson again?” before DC decided that stealing the tires off the Batmobile was apparently a much better entrance. His resurrection, though? Well. Sometimes somebody punches reality and Donald Duck starts running out of fingers.Along the way: Doctor Doom, Nip/Tuck, comic-book OSHA violations, why Gotham apparently produces an alarming number of supervillains with advanced degrees, the continued importance of putting respect on Dr. Harleen Quinzel’s name, and why a good retcon should make you say “oh, that works” instead of “why is that attached there now?”And yes—this conversation got big enough that you’re getting a Part 2.Follow Up Your Nerd Cred:Instagram: @UpYourNerdCredPodCiCi: @CiraCDavisAM Diaz: @AMDiazArtListen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube, and make sure you like, subscribe, and leave us your own burning nerd questions.#UpYourNerdCred #ComicBooks #Marvel #DCComics #Retcons #ComicBookHistory #Superman #Batman #HarleyQuinn #MrFreeze #TheFlash #SpeedForce #Wolverine #WinterSoldier #BuckyBarnes #MaryJaneWatson #JasonTodd #Robin #SuperheroComics #NerdCulture
