Previously known as the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, (which inspired Hulu's Original Series Murdaugh: Death in the Family), True Sunlight is the intersection of True Crime, journalism and systematic corruption. Celebrated journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are taking their style of reporting beyond Alex Murdaugh and his co-conspirators. We expose the truth wherever it leads giving voice to victims like Mica Francis, Sara Lynn Colucci, and Christa Bauer Gilley, while still pursuing justice for all the victims you've met so far like Stephen Smith, Dallas Stoller, and others. True Sunlight is the antithesis of True crime. True Sunlight values accuracy over "access journalism". True Sunlight is shed with empathy — not exploitation. True Sunlight was created as a matter of public service — not just entertainment. While the name of the podcast has changed, our mission, values and team have not. We are simply expanding our horizons while continuing to shine a much needed bright light on crime and corruption wherever it appears. Ranked #1 and #2 globally in 2021 and 2023 respectively as the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, True Sunlight provides unmatched insight into the crimes and criminals exposed on MMP and dives deep into new instances of where crime meets corruption across the US. We empower listeners to understand their legal and judicial systems through investigative journalism while providing tools to hold agencies and public figures accountable in order to change those systems for the better.

Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell continue to break down how Dick Harpootlian got admonished for lying to the court — and then, in the same Murdaugh Murders Retrial hearing, he may have done it again. In Part Two, Mandy and Liz unpack the defense’s pile of motions to compel (a civil-case tool, as Judge McCaslin reminded everyone — the state is already compelled by law), the ruling that lets the defense consume the last of that tiny DNA sample, and the bombshell Dick dropped for the cameras: a man he described as a “drug dealer… doing federal time” who allegedly (according to Dick) said he sold $15,000–$20,000 a week in pills to the Murdaugh family and PMPED. Then we checked the public record — the prison records, the federal docket, the plea agreement — and it tells a very different story. Plus: Creighton’s “very, very damning” comment about one of Alec’s ride-or-die friends, and why we’ve reached the point of no return. At Friday's pre-trial hearing in the Murdaugh murders retrial, Judge Debra McCaslin corrected the record on Dick Harpootlian's claim that Alex passed a polygraph "with flying colors" — he actually failed the only polygraph he ever took on his financial crimes, and has never been polygraphed about the murders — and then Judge McCaslin delivered the reprimand we never let ourselves hope for: candor with the court is not optional (👀 Mebbie…?). This case will be tried under the rules of evidence, "not in the press and not in the court of public opinion." Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell break down the polygraph saga fact by fact, the April 5, 2027 trial date showdown ("whether you like it or not"), and the legacy (old man) media coverage that buried the lede. In Part Two of 168 covering Judge Carmen Mullen’s historic disciplinary hearing, ODC attorney Ericka Williams locks Mullen into the recording’s timeline — her first words to deputies captured from the 7:32 mark on — then asks the only question that matters: where on this tape do you ask officers to take Ernie to a hospital? Her answer, under oath: “I didn’t hear it on this clip.” Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell break down the verb tenses that undercut her I-learned-it-all-on-scene story, her “I sign warrants all the time” moment, the claim that jail was the best mental healthcare available, and a character parade featuring her husband and a former Chief Justice. Plus: Eric Bland takes us inside the courtroom, and leaves a message for y’all. Nearly four years after first reporting that South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Carmen Mullen was caught on video trying to find probable cause to arrest a mentally ill man in her gated neighborhood, Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are finally seeing justice start to take shape. But will there be consequences? On Sept. 29, 2026, Judge Mullen appeared before the Commission on Judicial Conduct to answer for her actions on Dec. 7, 2017, on Hilton Head Island, when she inserted herself into a landlord-tenant dispute with sheriff’s deputies at the scene. Judge Mullen says she was duty-bound to protect the man and get him medical help. Does the evidence show that? Not at all — in Mandy's and Liz's opinions, anyway. However, good ole’ legacy media, as always, seems to have her back. On Part One, we share hearing testimony — including from the deputy on the scene that night — and go back to the receipts, comparing Judge Mullen's sworn story against what she actually said and did while suggesting ways to get the man charged and jailed — a man deputies said had committed no crime. Stay Tuned for our replay and analysis of Judge Carmen Mullen’s combative ODC hearing Monday for Premium Members. We knew something was fishy about the Greg Alexander leak — and then Team Murdaugh told on themselves. Right as Part 1 wrapped, Dick and Jim filed a third motion to compel, accusing the state of a Brady violation for sitting on a 2023 witness statement they claim to have "learned of from a newspaper." But the motion does something reckless: it outs the names of alleged state grand jury witnesses and SLED's alleged source — the very secrecy meant to protect witnesses in a case involving the freaking Murdaughs. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell walk through the subpoena timeline, the Joe McCulloch factor, and the Icarus problem at the heart of the defense's argument: to blow up the Alexander investigation, they have to treat allegations as true that would point straight back at Murdaugh. Plus: Some words for SLED and the AG's office. This week, The (Charleston) Post and Courier reported that Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander — a loyal ally of accused murderer Alex Murdaugh — is under State Grand Jury investigation on accusations that he transported the Murdaugh murder weapons and bloody clothing to his police station after Alex's wife and son were killed on June 7, 2021. For years, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell have reported on Alexander's ties to Murdaugh — and huge questions have existed from the start about his movements that night and why he was at the murder scene at all. Alex's little brother tried to answer those questions at the 2023 trial, but only added to the confusion. While it's encouraging that SLED and the Attorney General's Office are finally investigating, Mandy and Liz smell something fishy. Why is this leaking now? Who benefits from these headlines six months before Alex's trial? And what role, if any, does Team Murdaugh have in making it public? We'll get into more Murdaugh filings on Part Two with all the Mullen matters reserved for next week - tune in Monday 10/5/26 on Patreon, YouTube or Facebook to watch the redacted hearing.Let's Dive In… 🥽 🦈Share the LUNASHARK® Premium Community now on Patreon - Together we go further ☀️🩷🩷By Popular Demand, You Can “Help Journalist Mandy Matney Fight $176,500 Contempt Order” GoFundMe 🩷🩷Lawyers & judges: email your insights or offer your expertise to legal@lunasharkmedia.comEpisode References“Pair of Lowcountry cops investigated for allegedly handling missing Murdaugh murder weapons” - The Post and Courier, Sept 27, 2026 📰“Murdaugh Retrial | Defense Attorneys Hold Press Conference” - Live 5 News, May 18, 2026 🎞️“Yemassee police captain found not guilty” - Hampton County Guardian, Nov 27, 2012 📰 Stay Tuned, Stay Pesky and Stay in the Sunlight...☀️ Learn more about LUNASHARK Premium Membership on Patreon or at lunashark.supercast.com to get bonus episodes like our Premium Dives, Wherever It Leads..., Girl Talk, and Soundbites that help you Stay Pesky and Stay in the Sunlight. In her official answer to the ODC, Judge Carmen Mullen says she was just a good citizen worried about a mentally ill man's safety. In Part Two of True Sunlight #166, Investigative Journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell play the recording from that December 2017 night in Port Royal Plantation and let her own words do the talking. Mullen tells deputies she has sentenced Ernie "the Attorney" before. She questions whether he has a lease and says she told the homeowner to press charges, then introduces herself to that homeowner… for the first time…? She says "you gotta get rid of him" and asks to "find some charges." According to the police report, she also suggests she could sign the warrant herself. We also dig into the threat-filled lawsuit against Ernie that Mullen dismissed months earlier, and a Hilton Head real estate agent named Moose Rini whose name keeps coming up in police reports, trial transcripts, and sentencing memos. Judge Mullen's hearing before the Commission on Judicial Conduct is Tuesday, September 29, in Columbia and our team will be there to capture and share all the details.
