Golfers can be a stubborn bunch, especially when it comes to equipment. We all have preferences, whether it’s a certain shaft flex, clubhead shape, or even the weight of our golf clubs. But what happens when those preferences actually get in the way of better performance? That’s the question we’re tackling in Episode 14 of Splitting Fairways. For years, lightweight golf clubs have carried a certain stigma. Mention a 40-gram driver shaft or a 60-gram graphite iron shaft, and plenty of golfers immediately think of equipment designed for seniors or players with slower swing speeds. But is that perception keeping golfers from finding something that could actually improve their games? Lightweight Golf Clubs vs. Heavier Shafts This week’s discussion comes from two very different perspectives. Ryan recently spent time testing the XXIO 14+ lineup, including irons featuring incredibly lightweight 59-gram shafts. The results were surprising, producing some of his fastest iron speeds in the past year without the loss of head awareness you might expect. Of course, there’s another side to the conversation. Jeremy generates considerably more swing speed and approaches equipment weight differently. While he prefers iron shafts in the 100–110-gram range, going too light can create issues with timing, tempo, and overall control. So where is the sweet spot? Is Your Ego Getting in the Way of Better Golf? That’s where things get interesting. Are golfers choosing heavier shafts because they genuinely perform better, or because playing something lighter feels like admitting they need help? The goal isn’t to play lighter golf clubs. It’s to play the right ones. Tune in to Episode 14 of Splitting Fairways and let us know: Are your golf clubs too heavy? <meta itemprop="description" content="Are your golf clubs too heavy? Could switching to lighter golf shafts actually help you swing faster, hit the ball farther, and play better golf? In Episode 14 of Splitting Fairways, Ryan and Jeremy debate one of golf's most overlooked equipment questions: Are golfers playing heavier clubs because they perform better, or because their egos won't let them try something lighter? Lightweight golf clubs have long been associated with senior golfers and slower swing speeds, but does that reputation still make sense? After testing the

Bluetooth speakers have become almost as common on the golf course as rangefinders and GPS units. For some golfers, music is simply part of the experience. For others, one of the best parts about playing golf is getting outside and enjoying a few hours without all the extra noise. So, who is right? On this episode of Splitting Fairways, Ryan and I debate whether music actually belongs on the golf course. I’m taking the pro-music side, while Ryan would prefer golfers leave the speaker at home. Well…sort of. Because like most things we discuss, it isn’t quite that simple. When Does Your Music Become Everyone Else’s Music? There is a big difference between playing music quietly enough for your cart or foursome to enjoy and making sure the group three fairways over knows exactly what is on your playlist. And maybe that is where the real debate begins. Does the type of round matter? Music during a Saturday afternoon round with your buddies might feel completely normal, but what about a peaceful 7:00 AM tee time? Like many of golf’s unwritten rules, which we discussed in an earlier episode, there may not be one answer that works for every round or every golfer. Then we get to perhaps the most important question: Who gets veto power? If three golfers want music and one wants silence, should the majority win? Or, as Ryan argues, should silence be the default because nobody else should be forced to listen to your music? Of course, we also have to address one of golf’s greatest crimes: two carts playing two completely different playlists. Music on the golf course isn’t going anywhere, but that doesn’t mean anything goes. Where should golfers draw the line? Check out our latest episode of Splitting Fairways and let us know: Are you Team Music or Team Silence? <iframe id="_ytid_14581" width="1170" height="658" data-origwidth="1170" data-origheight="658" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/z6VyY5qVA7w?enablejsapi=1&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=0&rel=1&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=1&disablekb=0&" class="__youtube_prefs__ epyt-is-override no-lazyload" title="YouTube player" a

Should a golfer shooting 90’s really spend $60 on a dozen golf balls? That question is at the center of our latest episode of Splitting Fairways, recorded from the THP Titleist Golf Ball Experience at Hidden Creek Golf Club in New Jersey. Does Handicap Really Matter? There are plenty of shortcuts golfers use when picking a golf ball. Slower swing speed means play something soft. Higher handicaps shouldn’t waste money on premium balls. Faster players need something that spins less. The problem is that golf ball fitting isn’t necessarily that simple. Ryan and I have considerably different swing speeds, yet we both tend to benefit from a similar higher-flight, higher-full-swing-spin profile. We arrive there for different reaso
