Mentalist, occultist, and horror host Saul Ravencraft joins me for a journey into the mysterious! We explore why horror movies can feel comforting, Saul's experiences with mentalism and spirit communication, his work at Sherwood Forest Faire, and his love of classic horror cinema. Plus Horror Headlines, Halloween trivia, Bone Deep, and Scarah's Scary Hotline! Until next time, I'll see you in your screams.
Fellow horror host Professor Griffin returns to the Domicile of the Doomed for a celebration of all things Halloween! We revisit childhood costumes and trick-or-treating, explore classic horror films and Halloween traditions, and talk about everything from Jason Voorhees and Stephen King to Ray Bradbury and the history of the holiday itself. Plus horror trivia, a special giveaway, and some wonderfully spooky nostalgia. Until next time, I'll see you in your screams.
Occult historian, author, and collector Brandon Hodge joins me with a collection of antique spirit communication devices and some incredible stories behind them. We talk about the origins of the Ouija board, Victorian séances, spirit trumpets, writing planchettes, the history of Spiritualism, and how Hollywood helped shape our fears about talking boards. Brandon also shares the years of research behind his new book, Supernatural Machines, and shows off some remarkable pieces from his collection, including an original Ouija board from the 1890s. Plus Horror Headlines, Bone Deep, Scarah's Scary Hotline, and more. Until next time, I'll see you in your screams.
Haunt season is here, so I invited two of my fellow Bat City Scaregrounds monsters into the Domicile of the Doomed. Orlock the Defiler returns for his third Screamcast, this time joined by Caruso, the primordial terror who's apparently been hanging around the land since long before any of us got there. We talk about their histories, the monsters and attractions of Bat City, the brand new Ritual haunt, Castle Orlock, Slaughter Mall, haunt actors, weird patrons, and what makes a good haunted house. Then Orlock and Caruso play Possess, Pester or Petrify with some horror icons and spend the rest of the episode insulting each other while I attempt to maintain some semblance of control. Plus Horror Headlines, Scarah's Scary Hotline, Bat City's artists and vendors, and a lot of haunt-season nonsense. Until next time, I'll see you in your screams.
Director and cinematographer David Blue Garcia joins Scarah to talk about taking over Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) after production had already begun and what it took to bring Leatherface back to the screen. David gets into shooting the film in Bulgaria, changing the camera and lens package, stretching the schedule to give the bus massacre the time it needed, working with Mark Burnham as Leatherface, and even shooting part of the movie himself when his DP got sick. He also shares the story behind his unmade follow-up to Texas Chainsaw, which would have brought Leatherface into a modern Texas suburb, and talks about shooting Blood Fest here in Austin and his upcoming project The Lifted. Plus Horror Headlines, Bone Deep, Scarah's Scary Hotline, and plenty of horror talk along the way.
It's just me this week, so I'm catching up with the chat and talking about what I'm watching, what's happening in horror, and the movies I'm most excited to see. I get into Never After Dark, Other Mommy, Robert Eggers' new werewolf movie, Black Zombie, Hollow Warrior, and Anna Biller's The Face of Horror. There's also some Mike Flanagan and Dark Tower news, horror fashion, American Horror Story, and a little Widow's Bay Emmy celebration. Then I listen to your suggestions on Scarah's Scary Hotline for my October Scream Theatre screening, including Terrifier, All Hallows' Eve, Ju-On, and some other possibilities. This week's new hotline question: Which iconic horror movie villain actually had a justifiable excuse for their murder spree? Call 512-710-8766 and leave me a voicemail. I'll play some of your answers on the next show. Until next time, I'll see you in your screams.
This week I'm joined by my friend Joel Robertson, film programmer, movie reviewer, physical media collector, musician, and video store purveyor at Austin's We Love Video. Joel and I have a lot in common, especially our love of showing movies to an audience and then getting up there to talk about them. We talk about his Odd World screening series, the history of We Love Video, and why places where movie people can actually get together still matter. Joel describes We Love Video as both a video store and a community space, with around 30,000 movies and its own 35-seat microcinema. We also get into physical media and why Joel thinks it's more important than ever to actually own the movies you care about. Then we complain about what happened to the Alamo Drafthouse, talk Tubi, documentaries, movie collecting, his reviews at Moving Picture House, and his band Hounding. Plus Bone Deep, where Joel landed right at 50%, and some very entertaining messages on Scarah's Scary Hotline. Until next time, I'll see you in your screams.
This week I'm joined by filmmaker J.M. Logan, and this guy has some STORIES. J.M. has worked on more than 100 films over the last three decades, but he got an especially wild start: at just 19, he worked on Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, where he created all three of Leatherface's looks — including the Pretty Lady mask. And when they needed somebody to actually be Leatherface for part of the chase? Yep. He did that too. We talk about growing up in Austin obsessed with making movies, practical effects and animatronics, working with Screaming Mad George, The Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto, and what decades behind the scenes taught him about actually getting a movie made. Then we get into Josh's new adventure-horror feature The Relic: Dragon, the beginning of his planned Relic Universe. We talk monsters, cosmic horror, practical effects, indie filmmaking and why he decided that everyone who worked on the movie should share in its success. Plus Horror Headlines, Bone Deep, Scarah's Scary Hotline, and a whole lot of movie talk. Stay spooky. Stay weird. I'll see you in your screams.
