The Monster Squad (1987)

We're breaking down The Monster Squad (1987) — a delightfully loopy, cult-classic movie where a gang of monster-obsessed kids (yeah, the kind of kids we were) band together with wooden stakes, silver bullets and way too much pluck to stop Dracula and his monster bowling team from grabbing an amulet that could plunge the world into darkness. We walk through the basic plot (kids find a German monster manual, adults don’t believe them, mysterious neighbor helps, Phoebe saves the day), explain why it flopped at the box office but later found life on VHS and at conventions, and name-drop the folks behind it: Fred Dekker directing and Shane Black co-writing — basically horror nerds with a sense of mischief. I also call out stuff that hasn’t aged well — the casual homophobic slurs and some odd teen-sex humor — and we talk about how that changes our viewing now versus the nostalgic, candy-corn-coated memories of the '80s. We gush over the sweet, unexpected friendship between little Phoebe and Frankenstein’s Monster (yes, the scene with the costume box is a heart-melter), and laugh/facepalm at the movie’s bigger comic beats — Wolfman vs. dynamite, the mummy unravelling, and the kids trying to make silver bullets in shop class. There’s also a neat bit about trademark restrictions (so Gill Man not exactly “Creature from the Black Lagoon”) and how that shaped the monster designs — a useful primer if you care about film rights and creature effects. Along the way we riff on Halloween rituals, bad vinyl costume memories, and why Gen X kids got away with more unsupervised daring than today's smartphone-chaperoned youth. If you like kid-adventure-meets-horror (think The Goonies with fangs), we give you similar recs and the lowdown on why Monster Squad still bites in the best possible way. We dove head-first into Halloween nostalgia and a full-on love letter / roast of the 1987 cult flick Monster Squad — and let me tell you, we had opinions. We walk through the movie’s goofy plot (kids who obsess about classic monsters discover they’re real; Dracula wants a magical amulet; wooden stakes and silver bullets ensue), and we unpack the showy bits that made us cheer, groan, and slap our foreheads. I talk about the heart of the movie — Sean (Andre Gower) leading a scrappy crew, Phoebe the little kid who saves the day and befriends Frankenstein’s monster, and that bittersweet moment where the monster sees a Halloween mask and finally understands how others see him. We also nerd out about the production: Fred Decker’s monster-loving origins, Shane Black’s co-writing fingerprints, Stan Winston’s creature designs, and how trademark headaches forced creators to rename or re-imagine classic beasts (Gill Man, not Creature From the Black Lagoon — minor legal spells at work). We don’t just summarize — we live in the scenes. I narrate the wild set pieces (treehouse dynamite, the Wolfman’s explosive gag, the school-gone-weird vampire hussies) and flag the movie’s cult trajectory: a box-office flop that found life on VHS and at midnight screenings. Along the way we laugh about the kids’ resourcefulness (silver-bullet-making in shop class? yikes), celebrate the friendship moments (Phoebe & Frankie forever), and give props to the cast — Andre Gower, Ryan Lambert, Tom Noonan as the sympathetic monster, Duncan Regehr as Dracula — while teasing trivia (Liam Neeson allegedly auditioned). It’s nostalgia with nuance: part affection, part constructive heckling, all delivered with the kind of cozy, popcorn-scented banter you’d expect from two folks who grew up on these films.Takeaways:We loved revisiting Monster Squad (1987) as a nostalgic 80s mashup that mixes kid-adventure energy with adult jokes, but yeah — some of the language and jokes haven’t aged gracefully.I explain that the film was a commercial flop initially yet became a cult favorite through VHS rentals and later documentaries like Wolfman's Got Nards, showing how home video can revive overlooked movies. We pointed out an important production detail: the filmmakers couldn’t legally copy Universal’s monster designs, so Stan Winston’s team reimagined Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, and the Gill Man for modern audiences.I called out problematic elements plainly — the movie casually uses homophobic slurs and problematic tropes, and the German neighbor/ Holocaust tattoo scene raises representational and cultural sensitivity questions we now view differently. We admired the heart of the story — kids-as-heroes, especially little Phoebe befriending Frankenstein’s monster — which highlights empathy and childhood bravery despite the film’s occasional tonal whiplash and adult humor.I laughed and winced at the film’s wild solutions (melting silver in shop class, dynamite vs. werewolf), using that to explain how 80s movies normalized risky, DIY heroics in a very different cultural moment. We dug into behind-the-scenes trivia

The Peanutbutter Solution (1985)

We dive right into The Peanut Butter Solution — a wonderfully bonkers 1985 kids’ fantasy where 11-year-old Michael loses all his hair after a spooky encounter, uses a ghost-given peanut-buttery potion that makes his hair grow out of control, and gets kidnapped by a sinister art teacher who wants to turn that magic hair into irresistible paintbrushes. We riff on the plot (yes, the peanut-butter recipe includes “five dead flies” — don’t try this at home), break down the family dynamics (absent mom, sister Susie filling the parental role), and point out how the villain’s brush-for-profit scheme turns the kid-friendly romp into something oddly dark. I explain a bit about production: it’s a Canadian Tales for All film shot with practical effects (no CGI), modest mid-’80s funding, and—fun fact—features a teen Celine Dion on the soundtrack doing one of her first English recordings. We also chat about the era: why 1985 felt culturally distinct (Live Aid, early AIDS awareness) and how that shapes the film’s tone, plus why the movie’s multicultural accents and low-budget charm give it cult status. Along the way we gush about the standout supporting players (Connie, the brave best friend; the surprisingly expressive dog), mock the wig moments, and share our takes on the climax and moral — kids using imagination and teamwork to outwit adults who’ve gone off the rails. Finally, if you liked this one, we toss you a couple of snack-tray recs (Little Monsters, The Witches) to keep the spooky-kid-movie vibe rolling. We dive headfirst into the gloriously weird world of The Peanut Butter Solution — and yes, we say 'we' because we were the two lunch-break renegades chomping through this one. We start off with our usual banter (shag carpet, AOL discs, Tom Hanks yelling about cash in podcasting — the classics), then rewind to 1985 and let the story unfold: eleven‑year‑old Michael gets scared by ghosts, loses his hair, and then follows a ghostly recipe that restores it… except he uses too much peanut butter. Hair grows out of control, the sinister art teacher (the Señor) smells profit and suddenly we’re in a bizarre kidnap-and-paintbrush business. We walk listeners through the plot beats — the wig gag, the midnight blender scene, the rope-to-tie-up-hair bits — and laugh at how many ways a children’s story can go sideways. We also break down why this movie still tickles our strange-film nerve: practical effects (no CGI — real wigs, puppetry, in-camera tricks), a low but clever Canadian budget, and the fact that it was filmed bilingually in Quebec. We highlight a couple of delightful curiosities — Celine Dion singing one of her first English songs for the soundtrack (yes, really), Skippy’s promotional cameo, and the odd multicultural chorus of kids chanting as Michael runs home. Along the way we toss in the human stuff: the family dynamics (a sister playing mom, an artist father), the vulnerability of kids, and how a film meant for kids crests into genuinely creepy territory when a teacher starts kidnapping children to make enchanted paintbrushes. We close with our takeaways: it’s bonkers, practical effects are charming, and if you like off‑kilter kids’ films, this one’s a culty treat.Takeaways:We walk listeners through the film’s wild plot: an 11‑year‑old loses his hair from a supernatural fright, uses a peanut‑butter concoction that makes it grow uncontrollably, and then a sinister art teacher exploits the hair to make irresistibly magical paintbrushes — hair‑raising, literally.I explain practical effects basics in plain terms: the movie relied on wigs, prosthetics, in‑camera tricks and physical props rather than CGI, which gives the film a tactile, handmade charm that modern effects often smooth away.We put the movie in 1985 context — Live Aid, Gorbachev, early AIDS awareness — to show how cultural moments shape storytelling and why some elements feel dated without that historical framing.I call out the family dynamics and character setup: Michael’s mom is absent, Susie fills a parental role, and those choices create vulnerability that fuels the plot and emotional stakes for child protagonists. We poke fun at eccentric production choices — many accents, reused wigs, chanting kids, and a creepy van-driving art teacher — but we also praise the earnestness and inventiveness behind a low‑budget Canadian production.I dig into the themes: exploitation of childhood creativity, commodification of talent (hair turned into brushes), and how fear and friendship become tools to both harm and rescue children. We offer viewing tips and extras: watch it as a kids’ fantasy with surprisingly dark edges, enjoy Celine Dion’s early English songs, appreciate the practical effects, and treat it as a charming, cult Canadian oddity.Companies mentioned in this episode:AOLSkippySeverin FilmsNickelodeonNational Film B
