Episode 62 — More Than a Sale: The Relationships Behind Your Furniture BusinessSelling furniture can be about more than completing a transaction. For Val, the connections she makes with people shape how she runs her business—and they’re part of what inspired her to create Furniture Flipping Blueprint.Val shares how her home showroom gives customers a chance to see her finished work and the workshop where she creates it. Those visits often turn into conversations, and meeting the buyer can make it easier to let go of a piece you’ve put so much time and care into. She also talks through the practical side of welcoming customers: keeping the workshop presentable without making it look unused, being clear about delivery costs and distance, helping with loading when needed, and reminding buyers to bring blankets or help for heavy pieces. And she tells the story of the customer who tossed a pair of end tables into her trunk while Val stood by, aghast, offering a blanket. In this episode:Why Val’s people-centered nature helped inspire Furniture Flipping BlueprintHow a home showroom can create opportunities for conversationWhy meeting a buyer can help you let go of a pieceWhat to communicate about pickup, delivery, payment, and loadingHow to keep your workspace welcoming without needing it to be perfectProverbs 22:1 reminds us, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.”If you’d like to see the training and community inside Furniture Flipping Blueprint, come take a look: ValFrania.com/Blueprint
Beyond Marketplace: Is Facebook the Only Game in Town?Facebook Marketplace is a wonderful place to sell refinished furniture, but is it the only option? What about consignment shops, vendor booths, craft shows, pop-up sales, or taking on custom furniture projects? Each offers opportunities to reach new customers, but each comes with expenses, challenges, and a few surprises. In this episode, I'm sharing what I've learned from trying three different consignment shops, along with experiences from Furniture Flipping Blueprint members who've explored custom work and home pop-up sales. We'll talk about commissions, booth fees, advertising, choosing the right location, and why getting your furniture in front of more people is only part of building a profitable business. And because nothing in my life seems to happen without a story attached, you'll also hear about an unforgettable animal swap, two purses I didn't need, our adventures selling handmade quilts and woodworking projects at craft shows, and a few lessons learned along the way. Some opportunities make money, some teach us what we'd rather not do again, and some simply give us stories we'll be telling for years! What You'll Discover→ Ways to sell furniture beyond Facebook Marketplace→ What to consider before placing furniture in a consignment shop→ How booth fees, commissions, and transportation affect your profits→ Why location, advertising, and customer traffic matter at pop-up sales and craft shows→ How smaller decorative items can complement furniture sales→ Why custom furniture work is a great fit for some artists but not everyone→ How to experiment with new selling opportunities without losing sight of what already worksWant Help Building Your Furniture-Flipping Business?Inside Furniture Flipping Blueprint, you'll find more than furniture painting and redesigning techniques. Your Home Has a Story to Tell. Are You the Main Character?Have you ever looked around your home and thought about how much of you is reflected in it? As furniture artists, we spend so much time creating beautiful pieces for other people's homes that we sometimes forget to use those same talents in our own. You know that old saying about the cobbler's children having no shoes? Well, let's make sure that doesn't describe us!In this episode, I'm sharing some of the creative projects I've done around our home, from transforming an antique door into entryway décor to turning an old window into wall art and using specialty paints and stencils to make our master bedroom hallway uniquely ours. Along the way, we'll talk about repurposing sentimental furniture, changing our décor as our needs change, and recognizing just how valuable the skills we've developed really are.And if you're new to furniture flipping, don't think these possibilities are only for experienced artists. Every skill can be learned, and every project gives you another opportunity to grow. You might even discover ways to share those skills with family and friends or create another source of income.→ Want to Develop Your Own Creative Skills?Inside Furniture Flipping Blueprint, I demonstrate techniques like stenciling, decorative painting, creating texture, and making your own décor in the Decorative Painting & Accents section. You'll find practical instruction, creative ideas, and encouragement to help you develop your skills and discover new ways to use them, both in your furniture-flipping business and around your own home.→ Come take a look inside: https://ValFrania.com/BlueprintBlog posts about projects mentioned in this episode:Jewelry Armoire (Named after Aunt Nancy)Baby Dresser (my first redesign!)Photos of our master hallway, entryway door etc. mentioned here: Your Home Has a Story to Tell
When Is Good Enough, Good Enough?Do you really have to fix every dent, scratch, sticky drawer, and imperfection before you sell a piece of furniture? The answer is one beginners probably don’t love hearing: it depends. 😂In this episode, we’re talking about furniture flipping craftsmanship and learning to recognize the difference between character and damage, history and neglect, and excellence and perfectionism. I’ll share some real-life examples—including an antique dresser in my RV, advice I’ve seen given to beginning flippers, and even a 45-year-old story about an oral surgeon that taught me something about the responsibility that comes with knowing what you’re doing.Because becoming a skilled furniture flipper isn’t about reaching perfection. It’s about developing the knowledge and judgment to recognize what matters, doing your best with what you know today, and continuing to learn as you go.If you’re tired of trying to piece together one-sentence answers from Facebook comments and wondering which advice actually applies to your project, come join me inside Furniture Flipping Blueprint.I’ll help you understand not just what to do, but why, when, and sometimes just as importantly, when not to do it—so you can build your skills, trust your own judgment, and become more confident in the decisions you make.→ ValFrania.com/Blueprint
Does using spray paint on furniture count as cheating? Do you have to paint every inch of a dresser? And does a more difficult technique automatically make a furniture redesign better? Not in my workshop. In this episode of The Furniture Artist’s Resource Guide, I’m taking you behind the scenes of the antique dresser I redesigned for our RV. Instead of using a traditional furniture paint for the base coat, I combined spray paints, acrylic stencil paint and several different metallics to create the finish I had pictured in my head. Along the way, I’m sharing some of the lessons I’ve learned about recoat times, primer color, metallic coverage, stencil care, topcoat sheen—and what happened when a spray can started spitting and accidentally gave me exactly the effect I wanted. This isn’t a step-by-step dresser tutorial. It’s about learning what different products can do so you can choose the right one for your project. Sometimes working smarter really is the better way.In This EpisodeWhy quick and easy doesn’t mean cutting cornersHow I used spray paint, stencil paint and metallics on an antique dresserSpray-paint mistakes I’ve made—and what they taught meWhy different metallic paints create very different effectsHow the right topcoat can protect your finish without dulling the glitzWhy knowing your products gives you more creative freedomWhy the hardest way isn’t necessarily the best wayIf you’re listening and thinking, "I wish I knew how to make those decisions for myself," you can learn. Furniture Flipping Blueprint gives you step-by-step guidance for developing your furniture-redesign and flipping skills, along with a community of furniture artists who understand the questions, mistakes, victories and learning that happen along the way. It’s a resource and a group of friends in one place.→ ValFrania.com/Blueprint
Well, THAT Wasn’t On My List Of Things To Do TodayHave you ever started your day with a perfectly good to-do list, only to have something go wrong and throw the entire schedule out the window? Sometimes technology breaks, a furniture project doesn't turn out the way you imagined, or an innocent attempt to save time turns into ten quarts of tomato sauce and a midnight canning session. Ask me how I know. 😂In this episode, I'm sharing how I handle those unexpected interruptions, including the ones I create myself. We'll talk about why furniture flippers need to stop rushing through projects, why I disagree with pricing furniture strictly according to materials and hours worked, and how slowing down can actually help us become better furniture artists. If you've been frustrated by mistakes, discouraged by slow sales, or tempted to give up because things aren't happening as quickly as you'd hoped, this one's for you. Learning takes time, and sometimes the project that looks like a complete disaster is the one that teaches us the most. Let's talk about finding the good in the mess, giving ourselves a little grace, and remembering to enjoy the journey.→ Ready to make your furniture flipping journey easier? You don't have to figure everything out on your own. Lime Paint for Furniture — Tricky, Expensive & Absolutely BeautifulLime paint can create depth, movement and an aged, almost stone-like finish that ordinary furniture paint simply can’t duplicate. It can also be expensive, tricky to apply and nearly impossible to spot-repair—which makes it a questionable choice for beginners or flippers who need to complete and sell furniture quickly. In this episode, Val shares what she learned while using Pure & Original Fresco lime paint on a serving cart and an oak entertainment center. Both pieces still live in her home nearly nine years later. She also explains the differences between lime paint, limewash and lime plaster; when this specialty finish might make sense for a high-end furniture artist; and why our own homes deserve to display some of the art we create.→ Explore Val’s furniture-flipping resources, guidance and community at ValFrania.com.→ See the complete Soft Taupe server transformation and step-by-step process on Love My DIY Home.
What Exactly Is Mineral Paint? If a jar says mineral paint, you would think that tells you what kind of paint is inside. But as I discovered, the word mineral can mean very different things depending on the product—and understanding those differences can help you make better decisions for your furniture projects. In this episode of The Furniture Artist’s Resource Guide, we’re looking beyond the front of the paint jar. I’ll share my experience trying Fusion Mineral Paint for the first time, why one little $20 jar taught me more than I expected, and how it eventually became part of a much bigger lesson about paint, marketing, learning from experience, and even selling furniture. We’ll also talk about why prep still matters, why a built-in topcoat doesn’t necessarily answer every finishing question, and why you shouldn’t assume a piece will sell quickly just because you painted it a popular neutral color. Sometimes the problem isn’t the furniture at all—it simply hasn’t gotten in front of the right buyer yet.Along the way, I’ll tell you what my greenhouse jungle taught me about learning furniture flipping one piece of information at a time. Because whether we’re talking about fertilizer or furniture paint, a little information can be useful—but incomplete. The goal isn’t to memorize every ingredient in every can of paint. It’s to learn enough to look beyond the marketing, understand what a product actually does, and choose what makes sense for your project.Because confidence doesn’t come from knowing everything. It comes from learning, trying, paying attention, and realizing that the next time you encounter a problem, you probably know more than you think you do.Ready to Keep Building Your Skills? If you want more than the what and why and you’re ready for step-by-step help with the how, take a look at the Furniture Flipping Blueprint:→ ValFrania.com/BlueprintAnd if you have a finished piece that isn’t getting enough attention on Marketplace, grab my free Marketing Checklist.
