What you are about to listen to is a short essay I posted on Substack a while ago that was originally a speech that I presented at my friend Greg Guevara’s (the YouTuber known as Jreg) “Anti-Clanker” rally back in September. It was an event about critiques of AI, featuring other guest speakers such as YouTube creators Gokanaru, Art Chad, Duncan Clarke, Were in Hell, and Cricket Guest. I didn’t publish my speech because I had not launched my Substack yet, but I figured I might as well put this article out now before someone else writes something that says more or less the same thing (maybe someone already has, but alas). Enjoy!
Get access to The Backroom ( 100+ exclusive episodes of 1Dime Radio like this) on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/OneDimeBONUS EPISODE: This conversation with Christian Parenti was originally released as a Patreon-exclusive episode of The Backroom, recorded well over a year ago. In light of recent disclosures and renewed scrutiny surrounding Dr. Anthony Fauci, the origins of COVID-19, and U.S.-funded coronavirus research, many of the questions raised in this discussion have become newly relevant, which is why I think it is worth releasing publicly now.In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by Christian Parenti, professor of economics at John Jay College, contributor to Compact, author of books including Radical Hamilton, Tropic of Chaos, and Lockdown America, and son of the late Michael Parenti. Parenti argues that much of the left abandoned its traditional skepticism of state and corporate power during COVID, embracing lockdowns, censorship, vaccine mandates, and what he describes as “scientism.” We discuss school closures and class, the Canadian trucker convoy, Big Pharma and Big Tech, vaccine mandates and civil liberties, biodefense and gain-of-function research, the professional-managerial left, and why Parenti came out of the pandemic identifying as both a classical Marxist and a classical liberal. You can listen to 1Dime Radio on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get podcasts.Timestamps:0:00 Cold Open: How the Left Got COVID Wrong2:21 1Dime Radio Intro3:19 Why the Left Embraced Lockdowns10:13 Fauci, the Lab-Leak Debate & COVID Incentives15:25 “Weaponized Solidarity,” School Closures & Mandates25:16 The Trucker Convoy, Censorship & the Populist Right32:46 Biodefense, Gain-of-Function & Vaccine History39:21 The PMC Left & the Politics of Respectability44:49 Vaccines, Myocarditis & COVID Risk53:52 Civil Liberties, Vaccine Passports & the Left’s Authoritarian Turn57:37 Classical Marxism Meets Classical LiberalismGUEST:Christian ParentiProfessor of Economics at John Jay College, author of Radical Hamilton, Tropic of Chaos, and Lockdown America, and contributor to Compact.Compact:https://www.compactmag.com/contributor/christian-parenti/John Jay College:https://www.jjay.cuny.edu/faculty/christian-parenti“How the Organized Left Got COVID Wrong, Learned to Love Lockdowns and Lost Its Mind: An Autopsy”:https://thegrayzone.com/2022/03/31/left-covid-lockdowns-mind-autopsy/FOLLOW 1Dime:1Dime Radio YouTube:https://youtube.com/@1dimeradioSubstack:https://1dimereview.substack.com/X/Twitter:https://x.com/1DimeOfficialInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/tonyof1dime/Main 1Dime YouTube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@1DimeeLeave a like, comment, and subscribe. Get access to The Backroom, with 100+ exclusive episodes of 1Dime Radio, on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OneDimeIn this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by Daniel from the YouTube channel What Is Politics? to unpack what we call the “Lizard Left”: the use of egalitarian and left-wing language to reproduce hierarchy, status competition, and social control. We discuss wokeism and the Socialism Conference, the DSA and the “rebel priest class,” why the left struggles to connect with ordinary people, what socialism actually means beyond the Soviet legacy, whether socialism can scale, and what dating apps, social clubs, tribalism, civilization, birth rates, and immigration reveal about the deeper problem of rebuilding a viable left. The second half of the conversation continues in the Patreon-exclusive Backroom. You can listen to 1Dime Radio on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get podcasts.Timestamps:0:00 Cold Open: Fitness, Fascism & Fake Politics4:31 1Dime Radio Intro5:29 Daniel Returns8:52 Wokeism & the “Lizard Left”16:55 The Socialism Conference & “Fitness Is Fascism?”30:34 The Rebel Priest Class & the Working Class38:17 Feminism, Immigration & “Actually Existing” Ideology43:17 What Is Socialism? Get access to The Backroom (100+ exclusive podcast episodes) on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OneDimeThis is an older bonus episode originally released exclusively in The Backroom. I’m releasing it publicly in part as a reminder of the kind of longer, less filtered conversations Patreon supporters get access to.In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by political theorist Benjamin Studebaker to revisit the idea of the “neo-left” and ask whether Pedro Sánchez and Spain’s Socialist Workers’ Party represent an alternative to neoliberalism or a left-wing way of administering it. We discuss immigration and labor power, borders and imperialism, the constraints imposed by the European Union, Spain’s tourism and property-driven growth, and why the Spanish model may not be the blueprint for the left that some imagine it to be.You can listen to 1Dime Radio on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get podcasts.Timestamps:0:00 Preview: Immigration, Borders & Imperialism3:02 Intro4:02 What Is the “Neo-Left”?14:50 Migration Policy22:24 Immigration & Imperialism35:13 Nation-States vs. Globalization44:19 Spain’s “Success” Story49:22 Sánchez and the EU Fiscal Rules58:21 Why Spain Isn’t a Blueprint65:19 Property, Demographics & MigrationGUEST:Benjamin Studebaker — Political theorist and author of Legitimacy in Liberal DemocraciesWebsite: https://benjaminstudebaker.com/Substack: https://bmstudebaker.substack.com/Political Theory 101: https://soundcloud.com/benjamin-studebakerFOLLOW 1Dime:1Dime Radio YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/@1dimeradioSubstack: https://1dimereview.substack.com/X/Twitter: https://x.com/1DimeOfficialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tonyof1dime/Main 1Dime YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@1DimeeLeave a like, comment, and subscribe.
